AWAPUNI TRACKWORK Thursday, June 11 By RON GURNEY Five-year-old maiden Empower is coming to hand well for trainer Matthew Eales, and galloped well again at Awapuni this morning. Fast work took place on the No 1 grass (slow) and on the plough (good). Empower used the No 1 grass and reeled off 600m in 36.5 to go with his 37.8 on the same track the previous Tuesday. The gelding began racing just on a year ago, and eight starts have yielded a third, a fourth and two fifths. Maidens by Vespa and Showcasing, trained by Lisa Latta, sprinted 600m in 37.2, while a Jimmy Choux gelding and an Alamosa gelding, two more with Matthew Eales, clocked 38.1. On the plough, time honours went to a Power two-year-old filly and a Burgundy two-year-old, both with Lisa Latta, in 50.2 for 800m, the last 600 in 36.6. Flying Surf, trained by Mike Breslin, and a Shocking maiden warmed up from the 800m to run home the last 600 in 37.7. Sequoia Dawn (Breslin) and a Makfi-Shi Kin Fly three-year-old filly (Peter Didham) were paired over 800m in 51 even, the last 600 in 38.3, while a Burgundy maiden and a Dalghar maiden, both trained by Lisa Latta, took 53.2 and 38 even. Canucia (by Zed), unplaced in two race-day outings in March, and a Road To Rock gelding were on terms throughout 1000m in 1.8.3, the last 600 in 38.1. They are both with Roydon Bergerson. Rock With Choux worked alone over 800m in 55.1, the last 600 in 40.5, and un-raced Tavistock two-year-old filly Town Cryer recorded 55.4 and 40 even. She is in the Bergerson barn. A Per Incanto three-year-old and a Power two-year-old, geldings trained by Anne Herbert, were not after time with 800m in 58.8, the last 600 in 42.6. Last Tuesday, this pair went 53.7 and 38.8 for the same assignment before going to the Foxton trials two days later, where the Power gelding was placed third over 850 metres. Their stablemate La Donna, an un-raced three-year-old filly by Per Incanto, was given a quiet 1000m, the last 600 in 43.8.
